In 1986, Mercedes-Benz named the new generation of W124 medium-sized luxury sedan E-Class, and the fifth-generation E-Class sedan was born. The fifth generation can be said to be a brand new model. Not only has the appearance been greatly changed, but the interior and engine are also quite different from the previous generations.
The fifth-generation E-Class is lighter, handles better and is more aerodynamic than its predecessor. A series of equipment that used to be optional, such as driver’s side airbag, car alarm device, ABS, central door lock, electric window, headlight washer, etc., have appeared as standard equipment on W124.
Although the history of E-Class can be traced back to W120 and even the older 170 series, to be precise, W124 is the official first-generation E-Class. The car dealer has produced a total of more than 2.21 million E-Class.
Sixth Generation E-Class
In 1995, the sixth-generation E-class sedan with the chassis code W210 was officially unveiled. The biggest thing on the front of the new car is the very unique four-round lamp shape at that time. The squareness and stability make this generation of Mercedes-Benz E-class sedan have its own unique charm.
In 1996, the first E-class models produced were E240, E320 and diesel version E300D, among which the E240 used a 2.6-liter V6 engine, and the E320 was equipped with a 3.2-liter DOHC straight-six engine E320 with a maximum power of 217 horsepower. The Coupe and Convertible versions of the E320 will also be produced immediately. After that, the sixth-generation E-Class sedan continued to have new models launched.
In 1997, Mercedes-Benz’s famous supercharged model came out, and the following year, Mercedes-Benz launched a turbocharged E-Class sedan. In 1999, AMG, which has become a member of Mercedes-Benz, launched the E55 AMG model equipped with a 349-horsepower 5.4-liter SOHC CV8 engine. In addition, BRABUS also modified this generation of E-class. The modified BRABUSE V12 can produce 640 horsepower, the acceleration time of 0-60 miles per hour is 4.1 seconds, and the top speed can reach 211 miles per hour. The Book of Records calls it the fastest four-door sedan in the world.
By 2002, the sixth-generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan had produced a total of 1.3 million units. Together with the C-Class model, it has become the pillar model of Mercedes-Benz.
